How to prevent workplace accidents
Mar 26, 2021

What are workplace accidents and the dangers

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) defines workplace accidents as: “An unplanned event that results in personal injury or property damage.'' OSHA is part of the United States Department of Labour. The administrator for OSHA is the Assistant Secretary of Labour for Occupational Safety and Health. OSHA's administrator answers to the Secretary of Labour, who is a member of the cabinet of the President of the United States.

Here are the dangers of workplace accidents:

1) Bodily harm

2) Loss of productivity

3) Business owners financial and legal impacts

4) Negative impact on company morale

5 ways to prevent workplace accidents

1) Safety Apparel
It is important that employees always are dressed correctly if the situation requires it. If the environment requires a certain level of personal protection equipment (PPE), then all gear must be worn before entering/commencing work in the said environment.

2) Being aware of your surroundings
A key factor in keeping oneself safe and preventing workplace accidents is being alert and aware of one’s surroundings. Getting enough rest/sleep every night is important to get yourself prepared for work the next day and ensure the safety of others and oneself. If you are feeling tired, take a break, grab a coffee, or do some stretching and return to work once you are feeling better and re-energized.

3) Regular inspection of equipment
There needs to be a fixed schedule to regularly inspect and service any machinery/equipment in the workplace before any mishaps happen. This needs to be enforced by the management and any faulty machinery or equipment needs to be fixed/replaced as soon as possible to mitigate any risk whilst using the equipment.

4) Training
Employee training can play a part in reducing workplace accidents, by either conducting in-house training or sending them for external workshops. Reminders/signs can be placed around the workplace as well to remind employees to take note of any dangers that may be nearby.

5) Stay calm
Staying calm would allow one to carry out their tasks with less risks as it would allow them to think properly before executing any action. If an employee is angry or in a bad mood, it might be a good idea to let him/her take a break before continuing any work, especially if it is handling any potentially dangerous machinery/equipment.

Summary

We hope you have a better understanding of how to prevent workplace accidents after reading this article. It is important to keep your employees and oneself safe in workplaces as everyone does not wish to get injured whilst working.
