On December 03 , 2025 Reconnaissance Energy Africa confirmed the discovery of hydrocarbon pay at its Kavango West 1X exploration well on PEL 73 in northern Namibia, advancing appraisal of the Damara Fold Belt play. Drilled to a depth of 4,200 metres, the well encountered approximately 400 metres of gross hydrocarbon-bearing interval within the Otavi carbonates, including 64 metres of net pay verified by wireline logs. An additional 61 metres of hydrocarbon shows were identified in deeper, naturally fractured zones, which may enhance reservoir deliverability.

Operations concluded on November 29, and the well has been temporarily abandoned ahead of a planned production test in Q1 2026. This month-long test will target both the net pay and the lower fractured intervals using tubing-conveyed perforating to assess flow potential. The well, one of the first to target the onshore Damara Fold Belt, is situated on a six-million-acre licence operated by ReconAfrica (70% interest), alongside partners BW Energy (20%) and NAMCOR (10%).

Aramco-gas

On December 03, 2025 Aramco commenced gas production from the initial phase of its Jafurah development, a key step in Saudi Arabia's strategy to scale its unconventional resources and boost domestic gas supply. This milestone, cited in the Saudi Finance Ministry's 2026 budget statement as a 2025 achievement, sees the project producing 450 million cubic feet per day (MMcfd), with plans to ramp up to roughly 2 billion cubic feet per day (Bcfd) by 2030.

The $100-billion Jafurah project, considered the largest shale gas development outside the U.S., is central to Aramco's long-term gas growth strategy. The gas will primarily replace crude oil in domestic power generation, potentially freeing up to 500,000 barrels per day for export, while also supporting Aramco's ambitions in global LNG and pipeline gas markets. The company recently increased its overall gas production growth target to 80% above 2021 levels.

totalenergies-namibia

On December 02, 2025, TotalEnergies SE was the leading bidder to acquire a 40% stake in Galp Energia's significant Mopane oil discovery offshore Namibia, pulling ahead of rival oil majors. The transaction is expected to include an upfront cash payment of approximately €200 million, with the buyer also covering roughly €3 billion in project costs on Galp's behalf. Galp plans to sell half of its 80% holding and transfer project operatorship to the new partner.

The Mopane discovery is located in Namibia's prolific Orange Basin and is estimated to contain up to 10 billion barrels of oil equivalent. For TotalEnergies, acquiring this stake would expand its presence in the emerging Namibian offshore play, where it is already negotiating development terms for its nearby Venus discovery. Galp has stated it expects to finalize a partnership by the end of the year.
