The Implications of ADNOC's 15-Year, 1 mtpa Agreement for the Future of the Ruwais LNG Project

On November 6, 2024, ADNOC has signed a 15-year, 1 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) long-term sales and purchase agreement (SPA) with SEFE Marketing and Trading Singapore, a subsidiary of Germany's SEFE Securing Energy for Europe GmbH, for lower-carbon liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its upcoming Ruwais LNG project. Announced at ADIPEC, the agreement formalizes an earlier Heads of Agreement and will commence in 2028. To date, ADNOC has committed over 7 mtpa of Ruwais LNG’s production capacity to international customers through similar long-term contracts.

This SPA aligns with the UAE-Germany Energy Security and Industry Accelerator (ESIA) established in 2022, supporting Germany’s energy security and decarbonization goals. Fatema Al Nuaimi, EVP of ADNOC’s Downstream Business, emphasized ADNOC’s commitment to providing cleaner energy and supporting Germany’s energy needs, while SEFE’s CEO, Dr. Egbert Laege, highlighted SEFE’s goal of advancing Europe’s energy transition.
