What are Analyzer Houses?
Analyzer houses are shelters that ‘house” analyzer systems and provide adequate protection so that analyzer readings are not affected. Analyzer houses/systems can normally be found in industries such as Oil & Gas or chemical processing plants for example. These houses are critical as they protect the analyzer system within. They are normally made of concrete due to the material’s strength and protection required. The houses also provide a safe work environment for staff to conduct any maintenance work to ensure that the analyzer systems within are operating reliably.
The demand for customized analyzer systems has increased rapidly with analyzer manufacturers building more sophisticated systems to cater for Oil & Gas industries, Chemical Processing Plants etc., where flammable gases or vapours, combustible dust, and easily ignitable fibres are present.
Safety is one of the key factors in designing analyzer houses as various hazards may arise with the release of toxic or flammable materials within analyzer houses. Toxic gases need to be monitored within and be kept within safe levels with the use of ventilation systems, especially if there is any toxic leak within the house and the ventilation system needs to be robust enough to quickly extract the toxic gases to a safe place. Personnel who are required to conduct work within analyzer houses need to be protected in the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as to prevent any injuries such as electrical shocks or from fire/heat.
The ATEX directive is applicable in Europe in view of the safety design/practices of analyzer hosues and the IEC 61825(Safety of analyzer houses) standard.
IEC 61285:2015 describes the physical requirements for the safe operation of the process analyser measuring system installed in an analyser house (AH) in order to ensure its protection against fire, explosion and health hazards. This standard applies for analyser houses with inner and/or external potential explosive atmospheres and it applies to hazards caused by toxic substances or asphyxiant gases. (Reference)
