On February 24, 2025 Saipem and Subsea7 signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for a potential mega-merger, with the combined entity to be renamed Saipem7. The merger, expected to close in the second half of 2026, is projected to deliver annual synergies of approximately €300 million by the third year and is valued at around $4.6 billion. The deal will combine the companies' complementary geographical footprints, capabilities, vessel fleets, and technologies, benefiting their global client base, with shareholders of both firms each owning 50% of the new entity.

On February 27, 2025, BP finalized all contractual terms with the Government of the Republic of Iraq to invest in the rehabilitation and redevelopment of several giant oil fields in Kirkuk, including the Baba and Avanah domes and adjacent fields like Bai Hassan, Jambur, and Khabbaz. The agreement, subject to final governmental ratification, covers oil, gas, power, and water projects, with potential for exploration. BP will collaborate with Iraq’s North Oil Company (NOC) and North Gas Company (NGC) to establish a new operator, aiming to stabilize and grow production through drilling, facility rehabilitation, and new infrastructure, including gas expansion projects. The initial phase targets over three billion barrels of oil equivalent, with the broader resource potential estimated at up to 20 billion barrels.
BP Executive Vice President William Lin emphasized the agreement’s alignment with BP’s growth strategy and its potential to deliver economic benefits to the Kirkuk region. BP’s remuneration will be tied to incremental production, prices, and costs, allowing the company to book a share of production and reserves. The project, expected to commence in 2025, fits within BP’s financial framework and meets its investment return criteria. Lin expressed gratitude to the Iraqi government for the opportunity to deepen cooperation and highlighted the project’s role in strengthening BP’s global portfolio while supporting Iraq’s energy development.

On February 26, 2025 American Petroleum Institute (API) President and CEO Mike Sommers addressed the Economic Club of Pittsburgh, highlighting the surging electricity demand driven by the AI revolution and outlining policy solutions to meet America’s future energy needs. He noted that U.S. power consumption is projected to rise by 25% over the next seven years, with AI alone potentially requiring 51 gigawatts for data centers—equivalent to 103% of Pennsylvania’s current generation capacity. Sommers stressed the urgency of rebuilding infrastructure, reforming permitting processes, expanding LNG exports, and increasing onshore and offshore leasing to ensure federal lands and waters benefit the American people.
Sommers emphasized the importance of President Trump’s “energy mandate” and API’s Five Point Policy Roadmap as a guide for the new administration and Congress. He called for a proactive approach to harness America’s pioneering spirit, asserting that a new American century demands robust energy production. “Let’s seize this moment, face our destiny, and unleash the energy America needs,” Sommers concluded, urging leaders to secure the nation’s energy future.
