Receiving, storing, and handling of the heat tracing cable

It is recommended to inspect your shipment of heat tracing cable upon receiving your order to ensure the proper type and quantity have been received. Compare the information on the cable with the packing slip and purchase order to confirm receipt of the correct shipment. Do not neglect to examine the materials for possible damages incurred during shipping. Afterwards, store the cables in a dry place and keep the ends dry and sealed before and during installation.

Before installing the heat tracing cable

Before removing the heat tracing cable from the reel, you must conduct an insulation resistance test. Inspect the cable with a test voltage of at least 500 VDC (Volts Direct Current). Conversely, use a test voltage of 1000 VDC for mineral-insulated cables and 2500 VDC for polymer-insulated heat tracing cables. The minimum acceptable level must not be less than 20 megohms.

Testing should be conducted during the following installation stages:

  • While the cable is on the reel;
  • After installing the heat tracing cable;
  • After the installation of thermal insulation;
  • Before connecting the cable to the power;
  • Lastly, as part of a routine maintenance programme.

Ensure all equipment and piping to be traced are installed and pressure tested. Surface areas where the cable is to be mounted must be clean. So if there is any dust, rust, or scale, remove it with a wire brush and oil.

Installing the heat tracing cable

When installing the heat tracing cable, always defer to the manufacturer’s instructions to ensure proper installation. Begin by carefully routing the cables along the pipes or vessels, paying close attention to maintaining the specified minimum bend radius. Secure the cable at regular intervals using approved clamps or tape. Avoid sharp edges or abrasive surfaces that could damage the cables. Proper termination and electrical connections should be made according to the manufacturer's guidelines.

Installing thermal insulation

Before installing the thermal insulation, remember to conduct megger testing. Similarly, inspect the heat tracing cable with a test voltage of at least 500 VDC. Likewise, 1000 VDC should be used for mineral-insulated cables, while 2500 VDC is recommended for polymer-insulated cables. The minimum acceptable level must also not be less than 20 megohms.

After the testing is completed, it is time to install the thermal insulation. Again, please refer to the manufacturer’s instructions for details. Regardless of the type or thickness used, a protective barrier should be installed to safeguard the insulation from physical damage and moisture intrusion. This barrier will also ensure the proper performance of the heat tracing system. Remember to seal around all penetrations through the thermal insulation.

Repeat the megohmmeter test after installing the thermal insulation and weather barrier, but before energising the heating circuit. Doing so can help pinpoint any damage to the heat tracing cable that may have occurred during installation. 

It is recommended to energise the circuit temporarily to document the amps, volts, ambient temperature, and pipe temperature. Do not forget to record the values after 15 minutes of energising, as this information may prove valuable for future reference. Therefore, it should be maintained for the historical operating data log.

Lastly, we recommend inspecting your heat tracing system at least once yearly to ensure everything is functioning optimally. Record all information after conducting the test.
